As the VP, A&R and Recording Studio Operations, you'll be responsbile Create and manage recording schedules, budgets and the business related to the creation and complete delivery of commercial audio and video masters. Works under limited direction.
Responsibilities:
What you’ll do:
  • Review artist agreements to determine the amounts and payment schedules of the artist advance and recording budget or fund.
  • Create and/or collaborate with producers in creating recording budgets
  • Authorize budget compliant costs
  • Organize and schedule all phases of recording for all new recordings
  • Have an understanding of recording technology
  • Maintain the relationship with the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), maintain an expertise its regulations and enforce compliance for new recordings
  • Ensure that approved masters and videos meet production deadlines
  • Coordinate the creation of radio edits and remixes
  • Supervise the collection, archiving and storage of masters
  • Manage the department’s priorities and workflow of the A&R Operations team, company recording studio facilities and staff engineers.
  • Performs all duties inherent in a senior managerial role. Approves staff training, hiring, promotions, terminations and salary actions and prepares and ensures adherence to the department budget.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Outline of Specific Functions:

  • Artist Agreements
    • Liaise with Business Affairs to stay updated on the status of all artist agreements
    • Pay advances as per artist agreement and as authorized by Business Affairs
  • Recording Budgets and Schedules
    • Consult with A&R representative, artist, producer and artist manager to determine recording budget, schedule, location and personnel.
    • Recommend studios, engineers and musicians.
    • Negotiate rates with studios, audio vendors, engineers and musicians to ensure budget compliance.
    • Schedule recording sessions with studios, engineers and musicians.
    • Make travel arrangements for artist and other personnel.
    • Comply with the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) regulations for scale payments and benefits contributions due to session musicians who are hired to record by Concord.
    • Collect forms from session musicians and prepare AFM session reports in order to pay wages and benefits to musicians.
    • Prepare and obtain signatures on Performer’s Release Forms for vocalists and on Producer Declaration form agreements for producers.
    • Ensure label waivers are executed and received by business affairs prior to release.
    • Oversee sample clearance process where applicable
    • Monitor actual recording costs against the approved budget.
    • Authorize and prioritize all costs for payment.
    • Report on recording costs and status of budgets and schedules.
    • Initiate discussions with A&R rep, label heads and others if recording costs may exceed the approved budget and/or if the recording project is delayed.
    • Maintain company studio and engineer schedules and report on activity each month to accounting.
    • Attend recording sessions, when feasible, to ensure sessions are conducted efficiently, within budget and comply with the AFM’s guidelines.
    • Conduct weekly and bi‐weekly updates with each label and A&R to review status of active budgets, projected delivery dates, new signings and options.
  • Master approvals and production deadlines
    • Obtain approvals on new recording masters and video masters from the label head, A&R representative, artist and producer.
    • Oversee and approve A&R Production Manager’s orders for production masters from mastering studios and work order instructions to Universal Mastering Studios.
    • Oversee the status of test pressing approvals for CDs and vinyl in order to meet manufacturing deadlines.
  • Radio edits and remixes
    • Responsible for coordinating the creation of radio edits, mixes and remixes as requested from Radio Promotion, Marketing and International departments.
    • Schedule additional work to be done by staff engineers or independent engineers.
    • Negotiate all related costs for edits and remixes.
  • Collection of masters
    • Collect, archive and store of masters, charts, outtakes and production notes.
    • Research technology and make recommendations to make certain that all masters are safely stored and can be retrieved and used in the future.
  • Repertoire and Metadata Management
    • Supervise the Content & Repertoire team to ensure the accuracy of metadata, ISRCs and the collection of label copy and technical credits for new releases.
    • Oversee the management of the A&R library and A&R Coordinator to ensure access to all masters and alternate versions (radio edits, instrumentals, clean versions, etc).
  • Manage company recording studios and staff engineers
    • Coordinate the schedule for Paul Blakemore, staff engineer located in Nashville, and the schedule for Concord’s Studio at The Village, Seth Presant, staff engineer, located in Los Angeles
    • Make recommendations for necessary updates in all studios and maintain the annual budget of expenses.

Qualifications:
What you’ll need:
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a similar position.
  • Very strong negotiating skills. Knowledge in the various phases of recording and recording technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of regulations and scales deemed by The American Federation of Musicians.
  • Ability to form close professional relationships.
  • Excellent organizational and follow up skills.
  • Exceptional problem solving abilities.
  • Professional and diplomatic.
  • Thorough knowledge and proficiency with MS Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days minimum on-site.

Salary range: $118,000 - 150,000
