Salary Range: $80,000-$90,000/annually
Status:Exempt

This is a union position. The Trevor Project recently voluntarily recognized The Communications Workers of America (CWA) as the representative of certain employees for collective bargaining purposes, and this position is in the bargaining unit. The Trevor Project is currently negotiating the first collective bargaining agreement with the union that will cover the terms and conditions of employment for this position

Overview of the role

The Research Scientist’s primary goal is to work with the Director of Research Science to dramatically expand the body of research on the mental health of LGBTQ young people, with a specialized focus on the theoretical understanding of suicidology. The Research Scientist will collaborate on research design and analysis plans, conduct complex quantitative analyses, and contribute to high-impact peer-reviewed manuscripts as well as externally-facing reports and research briefs. Additionally, the Research Scientist will support internal initiatives, including Trevor’s crisis services and peer-to-peer social network, to ensure that everything at The Trevor Project is data-informed. The Research Scientist will be a leading researcher on suicidology among LGBTQ youth.

Who You Are

  • Experienced. You have a track record of publishing peer-reviewed research on LGBTQ young people, with expertise in LGBTQ youth mental health and suicidology, plus a Master Degree or equivalent study.
  • Collaborator. Proven collaborator who approaches all work and interactions with empathy and inclusion. Recognized success in creating relationships with cross-functional teams from varying levels, working closely with colleagues to brainstorm ideas, discuss pros/cons, and develop ways forward. Proven ability to listen and respond to develop mutual understanding and trust. Experienced in fostering an environment where different opinions and approaches can be entertained, considered, and appreciated while working as a team to find a resolution
  • Communicator. Demonstrated ability to articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively in written and oral forms to audiences inside and outside of the organization. Proven skill in distilling complex information into compelling, easily digestible narratives; presents information in an inspiring and persuasive way. Skilled at conveying technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Focused on service delivery and adaptability. Demonstrates a commitment to outstanding internal and external service to our colleagues, the individuals we serve, our donors, and those with whom we collaborate and communicate. Proven focus on proactive and inclusive issue resolution and continuous improvement for all systems and processes. Demonstrated flexibility in the midst of change, being able to successfully juggle multiple deliverables, and adapting to new situations with fresh ideas or innovative approaches.

  • that completing shareable outputs is the key to having a significant impact. You can conceptualize, conduct, and interpret complex quantitative analyses and have experience mentoring others in quantitative methods.


What You'll Do

  • Conduct quantitative analyses of The Trevor Project’s national cross-sectional, longitudinal, and international surveys on the mental health of LGBTQ youth people to increase our scientific understanding of the mental health of LGBTQ young people including key risk and protective factors for suicide.
  • Co-author manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals as well as mass consumption briefs and reports that will be published on our website and disseminated to the press and partners.
  • Present to a wide range of stakeholders, including internal groups, external partners, conferences, and the media, about The Trevor Project’s research as well as overall research on LGBTQ youth mental health and suicide prevention
  • Provide input to ensure that our future national surveys, both cross-sectional and longitudinal, tap into key research areas that inform our knowledge of and ability to advocate for LGBTQ youth.
  • Participate in the ongoing internal initiatives of The Trevor Project’s programs by collaborating with other departments.
  • Identify and internally disseminate relevant new research being conducted and published on crisis services, suicide prevention, mental health, and LGBTQ youth.
  • Other relevant tasks, duties, or special projects as assigned
